Overview of client

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is a cancer treatment and research institution in Manhattan in New York City.

Challenge

The overarching challenge was to design scalable experiences along the care navigation journey that improves patient support, reduces barriers to information, and empowers an increasingly diverse patient population for Memorial Sloan Cancer Kettering Center. Amongst a team of eleven designers we split into teams of three to address areas under the challenge. Each team's individual topics were as follows: Team A- Information Sources, Team B- Online Communities, and Team C-Community-based organizations. My team and I were responsible for designing under the topic area of "Online Communities" for LGBTQ+ cancer patients and caregivers.

Design Criteria

How might we?

How might we leverage the power of online communities to enhance support for the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals? Our research highlights the significant value in addressing the needs and vulnerabilities of this demographic, thus presenting MSK with an opportunity to elevate its‘ community support through guided care navigation.

Solution

A peer to peer support network tailored specifically for the LGBTQ+ community
that address their unique healthcare needs and challenges

Why it matters?

Receiving a cancer diagnosis comes with many challenges. Connecting with others navigating similar situations can offer new ways to cope, reduce feelings of isolation, and expand your network of support. An online support group allows you to give and receive support in a safe space that is professionally moderated.
